A Tradição do Ramo de Visco
A tradição na Irlanda, na Inglaterra e na Escócia, é pendurar um ramo de visco na aldrava ou na trave do caixilho da porta de casa durante o ciclo natalino (que segue até o Dia de Reis, no 6 de janeiro). Esse costume de reverenciar o visco parece vir de tradições pré-cristãs, celtas, relacionadas a druídas e outras entidades. Acreditava-se que a planta possuía poderes mágicos. Shakespeare a cita no Ato I de sua peça Titus Andrônicus: "Superada pelo musgo e o maligno visco". De onde se depreende que, na tradição original, a função do visco seria algo como dissipar o mal-olhado que se dirigia à frente de casa. Reza a tradição moderna, cristã, que se duas pessoas se encontrarem ao mesmo tempo debaixo de uma rama de visco, devem trocar um beijo. Daí que em 1971 a cantora norte-americana Aretha Franklin tenha gravado uma canção de Natal intitulada Kissing by the Mistletoe (Beijando-se sob o Visco).
The Tradition of the Branch of Mistletoe
